By the Sea Shore

She moves too slow and flowers too fast –
the redwoods stand high overhead;
unconcerned with the trail of ants below
marching into the great unknown.
Chickadees feast on crumbs from hikers’ snacks;
the park ranger bundles branches in a stack;
bikers race by, ringing tiny silver bells;
the sound of the ocean trapped in shells –
these fleeting moments will flow into eternity
burying precious memories beneath the sand
for a distant relative to dig up with their hands;
dust it off, and hold it up to the light –
mesmerized by the kaleidoscopic imagery,
before disappearing into the void of night.
