Sailing into the Light

by Tyler Housley

People tell me to write about hope.

“This isn’t the time for dark thoughts.”

Fine, so be it. I see the light everyday

And when I walk in the yard,—I smile:

At the Sun, enveloping me like a blankie,

At the birds bobbing about the branches,

At the bunny bouncing by the bushes,

And at the trees, towering over me, waving.

It’s sad that people don’t know:

When tears well on our eyelids,

And we turn towards the Sun,

Our vision sparkles like the ocean.

We don’t notice this most of the time,

Because our mind is lost in thoughts;

Floating about, inside our shell—

Reminding the world of our reality.

We spend countless hours fixated

On social media and mindless TV—

Missing the island breeze that blows

Without Tethys’ sublime assistance.

We founder on form and function;

Unable to grasp our goal, because we

Set sail blinded by bounties,—Look!

See! The light always shines on thee.
