University Preacher

by Simone Goodwin

Billy Sunday stood in the middle of campus

Holding a huge sign, to scare the sinners

Everyone walked by—we’d heard it all before.

Espoused from the mouths of busy streets

Billy, don’t you have somewhere to be,

Someone to heal and make whole?

A wise man doesn’t need a sign to convince—

Just a bit of clarity, to deter covetous desires.

Clearly, anger and hate got the upper hand—

I’m sure He would walk right by Billy, too.
